Muscle Mayhem by Dimitris James Iordanidis

📖 Book Description

Muscle Mayhem: A Hilarious Fitness Adventure

Every gym has a Bob. Sometimes it’s you.

Bob has spent years promising himself that he’ll “start Monday”. When he finally joins Iron Temple Fitness, he discovers that walking through the door was the easy part.

Between treadmill panic, bench-press disasters, protein-shake explosions, leg-day regret and a gym full of intimidating personalities, Bob’s attempt to get fit becomes a hilarious test of confidence and persistence.

Muscle Mayhem is a short adult comedy about being a beginner, feeling out of place and discovering that strength isn’t always measured by how much you can lift.

Beneath the gym mishaps is a warm and relatable story about body image, comparison, friendship, resilience and continuing to show up when you feel like quitting.

It is written for gym regulars, nervous beginners and anyone who has ever pretended to be stretching while secretly trying to survive.

👩🏻‍💻 My Review

Everybody Has to Start Somewhere

Muscle Mayhem is a short, light-hearted read following Bob as he decides it is time to get fit and ventures into the slightly terrifying world of the gym.

Bob is very much a beginner. He doesn’t know the equipment, he doesn’t know the unwritten rules and, despite his best intentions, things don’t always go quite according to plan. From weights and treadmills to protein shakes, his attempts at getting fit provide plenty of opportunities for things to go wrong.

What I enjoyed most, though, was the positive message sitting underneath all the mishaps.

Walking into a gym for the first time can be intimidating. It can feel as though everyone else knows exactly what they’re doing while you’re standing there wondering where you’re supposed to start. Bob reminds us that everybody does have to start somewhere.

He makes mistakes, embarrasses himself and has moments when giving up would probably be the easier option, but he keeps turning up. Along the way he finds friendship, encouragement and a growing confidence in himself. I particularly liked that his journey isn’t simply about changing how he looks. It is about feeling better, discovering what he is capable of and finding somewhere he feels he belongs.

The book is very short, with equally short chapters, making this something that could easily be read in one sitting. There were some inconsistencies and editing issues that occasionally pulled me out of the story, and I would have liked a little more depth in places, but the warm and encouraging message behind Bob’s adventures still came through.

There is also something rather lovely about a fitness story that doesn’t take the gym, or itself, too seriously. Getting fitter doesn’t have to begin with knowing exactly what you’re doing. Sometimes it can begin with simply being brave enough to turn up, have a go and come back again tomorrow.

If you’ve ever stood outside a gym wondering whether you’re brave enough to walk through the door, Bob’s chaotic introduction to fitness might just give you the encouragement to step inside.
