Hunted by Darkness by Kyla Rose

📖 Book Description

When she inherits her grandmother’s vast gothic mansion, Alyssa expects dust and family secrets—not the dangerously magnetic neighbor, Detective Nathan Hale, who watches her a little too closely.

He’s possessive, protective, and her every instinct tells her to run…

Yet she keeps being pulled back to him.

The town surrounding the mansion is steeped in fear.

Women are disappearing, rumors of a serial killer spread like rot, and the clues uncovered inside the mansion’s forgotten rooms suggest her new home is tangled in something far more sinister.

Caught between desire and danger, Alyssa must decide whether Nathan’s her greatest threat or the only one who can save her.

👩🏻‍💻 My Review

Atmospheric, Spicy and Something Completely Different

This was my first time deliberately stepping into Dark Spicy Romance, and I went into Hunted by Darkness curious to discover how I would get on with something a little outside my usual reading choices.

One of the first things I loved was the presentation. The artwork heading each chapter and the individual icons used for the different characters’ POVs rather than simply giving their names were such lovely touches and really added to the atmosphere of the book.

I was immediately drawn to Blackwood Bluff too. There was something wonderfully atmospheric about this huge gothic mansion in Maine, surrounded by so much space, and I loved the idea of 23-year-old Alyssa suddenly inheriting such a challenging property, uprooting her life and moving there to make a completely fresh start. The strange noises, creaking floorboards and growing sense that something wasn’t quite right gave the opening chapters a deliciously spooky feeling. Alyssa certainly lasted longer in that house than I would have!

Nathan’s arrival added another layer to the story. I liked that his initial intention was to warn Alyssa without frightening her unnecessarily, and the growing attraction between them quickly became another reason to keep turning the pages. I enjoyed the sexual tension and having Nathan’s point of view alongside Alyssa’s. Being able to see exactly what he was thinking while watching the attraction and desire develop from both sides created some really powerful moments.

There is a lot packed into this relatively short book, with romance, mystery, danger and plenty of spice all competing for space. At times I found myself wanting a little more scaffolding around some of the backstories and a clearer sense of the timeline. There were occasions when I stopped to question how different pieces fitted together rather than simply losing myself inside the story, but the pace and mystery kept me reading.

Although this was my first time deliberately choosing a Dark Spicy Romance, some of its ingredients weren’t entirely unfamiliar. I’ve previously encountered darker relationships and spicy elements within Psychological Thrillers, and there were glimpses here of that crossover between the familiar and something completely new. The language and some of the darker elements definitely took me outside my usual comfort zone, and I may need to loosen my grip on my pearls a little before my next venture into the genre! But importantly, none of that made me want to stop reading. I’m glad I decided to try something different with Hunted by Darkness. It was fast-paced, atmospheric and considerably spicier than my usual romantic reading.

Dark Spicy Romance may not be replacing my beloved fairytale romances anytime soon, but I finished this one knowing that I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for my next opportunity to explore the darker side of romance.
