Spicy, Playful and Seriously Good Fun

I went into The Roommate Subtext knowing that it was a contemporary remix of The Scarlet Pimpernel — it does, after all, say so right there on the cover! The only slight problem was that I had never read The Scarlet Pimpernel and knew absolutely nothing about it. The references and character names therefore meant nothing to me, but that certainly didn’t stop me having so much fun with this book.

This was a wonderfully entertaining romance that made me smile, had me completely invested in Maggie and Blake, and very quickly left me wanting to give the pair of them a gentle shove towards each other and tell them to just get on with it!

I particularly enjoyed the alternating points of view. Being able to spend time inside both Maggie and Blake’s heads gave their relationship an extra dimension, as I could see what each of them was thinking and feeling while they were still trying to work one another out. It was great fun at first and increasingly frustrating in the best possible way as the story progressed.

The chemistry between them was one of my favourite parts of the book. There is a lovely mixture of friendship, attraction, humour and genuine affection between them, and I really enjoyed watching that connection develop. They were characters I quickly became invested in and wanted everything to work out for.

And yes, this is most definitely a spicy romance! Some of that spice comes through the kinky stories Blake writes for his blog, where fantasy allows him to explore scenarios that can be daring, risky and sometimes quite dangerous — precisely because they are fiction. I really enjoyed that element of the book, particularly as those fantasies begin to take on another dimension when you know that Maggie and Blake are increasingly thinking about each other. It adds another layer to the attraction simmering between them without losing the fun and playfulness of the romance.

There is so much more I would love to talk about, but this is one of those books where doing that would risk spoiling some of the fun. I knew very little before I started reading and I’m glad I was able to discover everything for myself, so I’m going to offer future readers the same courtesy. What I can safely say is that this was playful, sexy, funny and thoroughly entertaining, and one I would happily recommend to anyone who enjoys a spicy contemporary romance with great chemistry and characters you can’t help rooting for.

And what about The Scarlet Pimpernel? Well, I still have absolutely no idea which parts of this story connect back to Baroness Orczy’s 1905 original! Rather than feeling as though I missed something, though, I think that demonstrates how well The Roommate Subtext works in its own right. I didn’t need any previous knowledge to enjoy Maggie and Blake’s story, while readers familiar with the original will undoubtedly spot things that sailed straight past me.

The unexpected consequence is that Elia Winters has now made me curious enough to want to read The Scarlet Pimpernel at some point, if only to discover exactly what I missed.

A fun, clever and deliciously spicy romance that I thoroughly enjoyed — and one I highly recommend.
