👤 About the Author

Becky Fleetwood lives in the Northwest UK with her engineering hubby. A mum of four, granny to seven girls and a busy volunteer at the local foodbank, Becky has run a cub pack, a toddler group and worked in schools and child protection. She loves to sing and dance and is determined not to act her age!

Her love of writing started when she won a large quantity of chocolate in a Cadbury’s writing competition, at the age of 8.

Becky is a bookworm and reads all manner of genres. As a lover of Hunger Games (Suzanne Collins) and Dragonflight (Anne McCaffrey), she began her writing career with a Young Adult Science Fiction Trilogy – The Chroma Series (Imogen’s Secret, Imogen’s Journey and Imogen’s Destiny).

An advocate of strong, analytical and believable characters, Becky had time to spare in lockdown so turned her hand to write a commercial adult fiction. Dancing Fools and All That Jazz – described as pacy heartfelt and uplifting – is an ideal holiday read. Published on 28th July 2025, it was inspired by her real life dance group – the characters are fictitious but the dance is for real.

👩🏻‍💻 My Review

I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from Dancing Fools and All That Jazz. It was one of those books that caught my attention because the cover stood out from so many others on the market at the moment. It felt fresh, different and full of personality, so I couldn’t resist taking a closer look. An amateur dance group wasn’t a subject I’d ever considered reading about. I enjoy watching Strictly Come Dancing every winter, but dance itself has never really been something that has interested me.

I picked this book up in the morning, intending to read a few chapters before coming back to it later. Instead, I found myself turning page after page until I’d reached the end that same evening. Yes… I’d done it again! Another book read cover to cover in a single day. I honestly don’t know how other people manage to stop at “just one more chapter” because once this story got going, there simply wasn’t a natural place to put it down. As a lifelong book lover with a rather fitting surname, I suppose it was almost inevitable that I would get carried away.

One of the things that impressed me most was how well the author handled such a large cast of characters. Each member of the dance group has such a distinct personality that they quickly became easy to recognise, and before long I found myself just as invested in their personal lives as I was in the dance competition itself. Some were certainly more likeable than others, but every one of them had their own place within the group.

The alternating viewpoints work brilliantly. Each chapter is told from the perspective of a different member of the dance group but, rather than feeling like separate stories stitched together, each character simply takes over the narration as the journey progresses. It keeps the pace moving beautifully and, despite the size of the cast, I never once found myself confused about who was who. The rehearsals, performances and the build-up to the competition give the story a wonderful sense of momentum, while the personal lives of the women provide its emotional heart.

There were a couple of developments that I suspected before they unfolded, but what I particularly liked was that the story never relied on them purely for shock value. Instead, each one became another step in the group’s journey, strengthening both the characters and the relationships between them. Although the dance competition provides the backdrop, it is the camaraderie, loyalty and support between the women that truly make this story shine.

There is so much happening throughout the story that I found myself constantly smiling, laughing, feeling frustrated and occasionally wishing I could give certain characters a piece of my mind. Every member of the group brings their own hopes, worries and secrets, and watching those lives intertwine was an absolute joy.

I came into this book expecting something completely outside my usual comfort zone and finished it wondering, where can I get more of this? It’s funny, heartwarming, emotional and wonderfully paced, with a cast of characters who genuinely feel like people you could meet in everyday life.

Although dance is what brings these women together, it isn’t really what this story is about. It could just as easily have been a choir, a knitting group or even a book club because, in truth, the activity itself isn’t what makes this story so special. At its heart, this is a story about friendship, encouragement, laughter and the extraordinary things that can happen when women support one another through life’s ups and downs. I’ll certainly be looking out for more stories like this in the future.
