Sometimes all it takes is one unexpected photograph to transport you back to another time and place. Memories return, old emotions resurface, and for a moment you’re no longer living in the present. I loved the way Liz Alterman used that simple but powerful idea to begin You’ll Be Sorry, and before long I found myself absorbed in the story.
What really drew me in, though, was Amelia’s voice. By speaking directly to the reader, she made me feel as though I was being trusted with her story. That immediate connection meant I quickly found myself completely invested in discovering what had happened and where her need for revenge would lead. It quickly became one of those books where real life simply had to wait because I needed to know how Amelia’s story would end. For one night at least, bedtime wasn’t dictated by the clock – it was dictated by the final page, and by the time I finally closed my Kindle it was after 1am.
The interwoven timelines work beautifully, gradually revealing the events that transformed Aimee into the Amelia we meet in the present day. I found myself equally invested in both strands of the story, eager to uncover the truth behind the past while wondering exactly how Amelia’s carefully planned revenge would unfold. Every revelation shifted my perspective just enough to keep me questioning where the story was heading next.
Without giving anything away, Liz Alterman does an excellent job of exploring the complicated emotions surrounding betrayal, grief and revenge. Time and again I found myself asking the same questions as Amelia. How much is enough? What does justice really look like? Is there ever a point where someone has truly paid for the hurt they have caused? Rather than offering simple answers, the story allows readers to wrestle with those questions for themselves.
One of the things I appreciated most was how my understanding of the characters deepened as the story unfolded. With each new revelation, I found myself seeing events from a slightly different angle, gradually coming to understand why Amelia was so driven by revenge. Some characters were far more frustrating than others, while others revealed unexpected layers that made them harder to judge than I first thought. By the end, I wasn’t simply invested in discovering how everything would end – I was emotionally invested in the people at the heart of the story. I also loved the way seemingly small details and conversations took on greater significance as the story progressed. Looking back, there were moments that felt almost insignificant at the time, yet later proved to have far more meaning than I had first realised. It’s the kind of storytelling that rewards readers for paying attention without ever feeling predictable.
Gripping, thought-provoking and emotionally engaging, You’ll Be Sorry is a novel that kept me reading until the early hours and still had me thinking long afterwards as I tried to settle down to sleep. Amelia’s voice stayed with me from the first page to the last. If you enjoy psychological suspense with layered characters, cleverly interwoven timelines and a narrator who draws you completely into her world, this is one I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.
