Until The Next Letter by Hannah Claire

Two Sisters, Five Letters, One Unforgettable Journey.

When sisters Libby and Rachel open a letter from their late mother, they discover that it’s the first of five.

Each letter asks them to scatter their mother’s ashes in a different place, and travel together to the carefully chosen locations.

What begins as an act of remembrance soon becomes a journey into the past.

With every trip, the sisters uncover unsettling truths about their family.

As questions mount, Libby and Rachel are forced to confront what they thought they knew about their mother, and about themselves.

Along the way, grief gives way to connection, laughter and unexpected romance. Old wounds are reopened, but new bonds are formed, offering the chance of healing and hope.

Until the Next Letter is a warm, uplifting novel about sisterhood and the courage it takes to face the truth. One letter, and one journey, at a time.

My Review

A heartfelt journey through grief, family and the power of finally understanding the past

Some books capture your attention with an intriguing premise, while others tempt you in with a beautiful cover. Until the Next Letter managed both, and from the moment I discovered it I knew it was one I wanted to read.

At its heart, this is a story about family, grief, forgiveness and the relationships that shape us. Hannah Claire explores these themes with warmth and compassion, creating an emotional journey that feels both intimate and deeply relatable.

Libby and Rachel are sisters who have always shared a close bond, despite the significant age gap between them. Rachel, the older sister, had a fractured relationship with their mother. Libby, much younger, grew up aware of the distance. Following their mother’s passing, her final wish is for them to take a journey together, scattering her ashes in carefully chosen locations guided by the letters she has left behind. As they travel from place to place, they slowly begin to see their mother, and the past, in a completely different light.

I loved the way the story unfolds. Rather than rushing towards dramatic revelations, each destination adds another layer to the family’s history, allowing the reader to piece together the past alongside the sisters. There were moments that made me smile, moments that tugged at my heart, and several that left me quietly reflecting long after I’d turned the page.

What makes this novel so special isn’t simply the mystery surrounding the letters, but the emotions they awaken. It beautifully explores the complicated nature of family, reminding us that people are rarely as straightforward as we believe them to be. Love, loss, regret and hope are woven together so naturally that every emotional beat feels earned.

Alongside the more poignant moments, there is also warmth, humour and the promise of new beginnings. As Libby begins to gain a deeper understanding of parts of her mother’s life she had been unaware of, she finds herself drawn into continuing something her mother had quietly begun, bringing her into contact with someone who becomes increasingly important to her. Their growing connection adds a lovely thread of lightness and joy to the story, with moments that feel natural, uplifting and full of hope, ensuring the novel never feels overwhelmed by sadness despite its emotional subject matter.

By the final page I felt as though I had travelled every mile alongside Libby and Rachel. Their journey is one of discovery, healing and understanding, and it is impossible not to become invested in where it will lead.

An emotional, uplifting and beautifully written novel that celebrates sisterhood, family and the courage to face the past. Hannah Claire takes readers on a journey that is as moving as it is hopeful, and one I won’t be forgetting any time soon.

A Personal Reflection

Whenever I read a story where someone leaves a letter to be opened after they’ve gone, I always find myself wishing, just for a moment, that my own mum had done the same. It feels as though I’d somehow missed out on one final conversation.

But then I stopped and thought about it.

My mum never needed to leave me a letter because she never left anything unsaid.

She was my mum, my sister, my best friend – all wrapped into one incredible person. We talked, we laughed, we cried, and we shared everything. Losing her broke me in ways I still struggle to put into words, but one thing I have never had to live with is wondering what she wanted me to know or wishing I’d said something differently.

There were no hidden secrets, no unanswered questions, no regrets over words left unspoken. She made sure I knew how loved I was every single day.

So while stories like this will probably always make me wonder what a final letter might have said, they’ve also helped me realise something even more precious.

The greatest gift my mum ever gave me was making sure a final letter was never needed.
