My Brain Thought It Had Finished the Puzzle…

A.A. Chaudhuri has been an author on my TBR for some time. Finally, I have managed to read one and all I can say is I wish it hadn’t taken me so long!

There is no delay in getting to the heart of the story. The author drops us right in, with the story being told from different perspectives and so many pieces of information to consider. Think of it as a jigsaw: you open the box, look at all those pieces and wonder where on earth to begin… My brain was picking up details and forming connections, even when I couldn’t quite explain why or know how much I should trust them. I was completely absorbed. Then, around halfway, I realised I may have joined too many of those dots and I’d worked it all out – that I knew what was coming – and that felt awful! I’d waited so long to read this author, I was loving being completely immersed in the world she’d created, and now I’d been too clever and ruined the experience for myself.

Oh, how wrong I was!

I’d worked out one tiny part of it. I thought I’d finished the puzzle while A.A. Chaudhuri was quietly telling me to keep reading! From that point onwards, whenever I thought I understood how another piece fitted into the puzzle, something would shift and make me look again. Some of my theories were right, some were spectacularly wrong, and there were even times when I allowed myself to be persuaded by the evidence that I was wrong, only to discover that perhaps I should have trusted that little niggle after all. I absolutely loved that!

This is such a cleverly constructed psychological thriller with layers upon layers, and exactly the sort of read that gets completely inside my head. I was so happy with the puzzle in front of me until I reached the point where I almost didn’t dare turn the page because I genuinely had no idea what was coming next!

I was genuinely invested in the characters and their relationships, which ramped up the emotional side of the story far more than I had expected. Beneath all the mystery, manipulation and suspicion are questions about love, family, guilt and the consequences of decisions made. There were moments when I was angry, moments when I felt desperately sad for characters, and plenty when all I could really do was stare at my Kindle and breathe.

This review may feel a little more random than usual, but I think I have to blame A.A. Chaudhuri for that. This wasn’t a normal reading experience for me, and I don’t think I can give it my usual kind of review! I don’t want to say much more about the story itself because The Home Swap is one of those books where the reader deserves to discover everything in their own time. What I can say is that A.A. Chaudhuri got inside my head in a way no other author ever has.

I started this book hoping that, after wanting to read her work for so long, I wouldn’t be disappointed. Instead, I finished it wondering why on earth it had taken me this long. Although I might need to let my brain recover before I do it again. 🤯 I’m not entirely sure my nerves could handle reading another one right now! I mean that as the biggest compliment.
