Michelle Kidd
Michelle Kidd is a crime fiction author best known for the DI Jack MacIntosh and DI Nicki Hardcastle series.
Michelle qualified as a legal executive in the early 1990s, spending ten years practising civil and criminal litigation. But the dream to write was never far from her mind and in 2008 she began writing the first book in what would later become the DI Jack MacIntosh series.
Michelle now works full time for the NHS and lives in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.
She enjoys reading, wine and cats – not necessarily in that order.

I Only Needed One Book to Know…
Jumping straight into book ten of the Jack MacIntosh series, without having read any of the previous books, had me hoping it would work just as well as a standalone. I needn’t have worried.
One of my favourite things about a police procedural is being taken along with the investigation rather than simply being told what has happened, and Michelle Kidd does this brilliantly. I felt as though I was working through the case alongside the characters, following each step and discovering new information as they did, albeit with the added advantage of being able to see things from multiple points of view.
The multiple POVs were a huge plus for me. They gave me a much broader view of the different people involved and added another dimension to the investigation. There are a good number of characters throughout the book, but it was always clear whose perspective I was following. I never felt overwhelmed, lost track of anyone or needed to go backwards to remind myself who someone was. Everything just flowed.
The pace kept me reading and the different perspectives kept the story moving, while allowing me to become invested in the characters as well as the investigation itself. I started this book during the day and had finished it before going to bed because I really didn’t want to stop reading.
I also thought the background from the previous books was handled particularly well. There were enough breadcrumbs about things that had happened before to make me curious about these characters and their histories together, but nothing left me feeling as though I needed information I didn’t have to understand the story in front of me.
And I have to mention the ending without actually telling you anything about it! It wasn’t quite the kind of ending I was expecting, and I really liked that. It left me with a smile on my face and was a refreshing change from the way I would normally expect this type of story to finish.
Unfortunately, all those little breadcrumbs from the earlier books had already caused a completely different problem…
By about 30% I’d decided that although I didn’t need to know everything that had happened before, I absolutely wanted to.
So I bought books one to nine. Then I finished my review copy. And as soon as book ten was released, I bought that too. Now I just need to find the time to go back to the beginning and read them all!
I think buying the entire series probably says everything you need to know! 🤷🏻♀️📚
