A Regency Romance I Didn’t Want to Put Down

I had read Emma Bennet before and really enjoyed her writing, so when I was given the opportunity to read her first Regency Romance, the first book in a new series, I didn’t hesitate to say yes. There was no pressure to read it by publication day, but I really hoped I could find a gap in my reading schedule. As soon as I did, I excitedly loaded The Earl’s Inconvenient Nemesis onto my Kindle, settled into my reading chair by the window and started reading.

Within the first chapter I had a feeling I wasn’t going to get much else done. A few hours disappeared, the Kindle came to bed with me and my intention to read just one more chapter turned into considerably more than one. When I woke up the following morning, I couldn’t wait to get settled again and find out what happened next.

Alice Fairfax has recently lost both of her parents and can see the pressure her family’s difficult financial situation is placing on her older brother Henry, the new Viscount. Alice loves her family, their home and the countryside around it, and she is determined to do something to help. Despite previously having absolutely no desire to endure a London Season, she has formed a plan. She is going to find herself a suitable husband.

Unfortunately for Alice, Anthony is going to London too.

Lord Anthony Worthing, the Earl of Tonbridge, is Henry’s best friend and has been part of Alice’s life for years. The two men spent much of her childhood tormenting her, and Anthony still knows exactly how to irritate her. Alice also has a fairly low opinion of the man he has become, and the last thing she wants while trying to find a husband is Anthony following her around and interfering.

I loved Alice. She is practical, determined and fiercely loyal to the people and places she loves. Her decision to find a husband isn’t driven by dreams of romance or excitement about London society. She sees her family struggling and wants to do something that might help. I also loved that throughout everything expected of her during the Season, she never stopped being the Alice who would much rather be outdoors, riding through the countryside or spending time with the horses.

And then there is Anthony. Alice has known him for most of her life and is absolutely convinced she knows exactly what sort of man he is. I loved gradually discovering Anthony alongside her and watching her begin to question whether everything she believed about him was actually true. Perhaps knowing someone for years doesn’t necessarily mean you know everything about them.

The story is told from both Alice and Anthony’s points of view and I loved being able to see their relationship from both sides. We sometimes know things Alice doesn’t, and that added so much to their encounters. There were moments that made me laugh, others when I desperately wanted to shake some sense into them, and plenty when I just wanted to keep reading to see what they would do next.

Their teasing and banter worked particularly well for me because there are years of shared history behind it. They know exactly how to annoy each other, and I really enjoyed watching their relationship develop as they spent more time together in London.

I also loved how Emma brought the Regency setting to life. I could picture the dresses, houses, London streets and social events without ever feeling overwhelmed by the period detail. The setting was important, but the characters remained at the heart of everything. Alongside the romance are family, grief, responsibility, reputation and duty, all woven naturally through the story without taking away from the warmth and humour.

By the time I reached the final part of the book, I was completely invested in both Alice and Anthony’s futures. There were moments when I genuinely had to stop reading for a minute just to breathe before I could continue. I wanted to know what was going to happen, but at the same time I really didn’t want the book to end.

I’m not going to say anything about those final chapters because they deserve to be discovered without even the smallest hint from me. For me, the ending was absolutely perfect and completely fitting for the story.

I started The Earl’s Inconvenient Nemesis already knowing that I enjoyed Emma Bennet’s writing. I finished it knowing something else: Emma Bennet is now an author I will happily read anything she writes.

This was genuinely the best book I have read in ages. I loved Alice, I loved Anthony, I loved being part of their story and I really didn’t want to leave them behind.

I can’t wait to return to Fairfax Hall and discover whose story Emma has in store for us next.
