A Snow Storm in June by RMG Parker

A severed head, dumped outside a police station.
A wave of brutal killings, engulfing the city.
A message in the post, sealed with a threat.

In Edinburgh, Detective Inspector Maxwell Burns leads the police investigation, caught between the media glare and a murky underworld of drugs, gangs, smuggling and corruption. Nothing is quite as it seems, and everything points towards a life he thought he’d left behind.

In Galloway, a wealthy corporation makes a big investment in a quiet corner of rural Scotland. But who are they really? And what do they want with a disused airbase? When some thrill-seeking local teenagers turn up uninvited, it might just cost them their lives.

As the body count rises and the threads converge, Max must face his past … and whoever is using it against him.

A Snow Storm in June is a darkly funny crime novel, set in Edinburgh and rural Galloway.

Perfect for fans of J.D. Kirk and Chris Brookmyre

About the Author

I first came across Bob Parker, who writes fiction as RMG Parker, through his Scotland Unplugged social media channels, which I discovered via his brother, Graeme Parker, better known to many as The Hoof GP.

Bob’s passion for Scotland’s history, folklore and landscapes shines through his videos, and it is easy to see how those influences have shaped his storytelling.

Originally from Galloway and now based in Edinburgh, he left the corporate world in 2023 to pursue writing and content creation full-time.

Readers may already be familiar with his work as co-writer of Graeme Parker’s bestselling memoirs, Bruised Sole and Code Brown.

With A Snow Storm in June, RMG Parker makes his fiction debut, delivering a crime thriller firmly rooted in the landscapes, history and communities of Scotland.

My Review

There is something particularly exciting about discovering a debut novel that feels as though it has been written by an author who has been doing this for years. That was exactly my experience with A Snow Storm in June by RMG Parker.

From the opening pages, I found myself drawn into a dark and dangerous world of organised crime, corruption and violence. The story unfolds through multiple points of view, with seemingly separate threads gradually intertwining as the investigation gathers pace. It is the kind of novel that rewards your attention, with each new revelation adding another piece to a much larger puzzle.

What impressed me most was the confidence with which RMG Parker handles such a complex story. With so many characters and storylines in play, it would have been easy to lose track of who was connected to whom, but everything is carefully balanced and expertly woven together. As the plot develops and the stakes continue to rise, the tension becomes increasingly difficult to escape.

The setting is another standout feature. Whether we’re in the heart of Edinburgh or the rural landscapes of south-west Scotland, every location feels authentic and vividly realised. Parker’s love and knowledge of Scotland shine through on every page, creating a strong sense of atmosphere that made me feel completely immersed in the story. I could easily picture the places, hear the voices and imagine the characters moving through them.

This is not a cosy crime novel. It is dark, gritty and often brutal, exploring the realities of organised crime and the devastating impact it can have on individuals and communities. Yet amid the violence and mystery, there is a strong cast of characters that kept me invested from beginning to end.

Knowing RMG Parker through his Scotland Unplugged content, I expected great storytelling and a strong sense of place. What I perhaps didn’t expect was quite how accomplished this debut crime thriller would feel.

A Snow Storm in June is ambitious, atmospheric and compelling, introducing a new voice in Scottish crime fiction that I will be very keen to follow in the future.

A brilliant debut and an easy five-star read for me.
