Me & Her by Kaelin Wennerberg

I only survived high school because of my best friend Mia.
Me and her, together against the world. No matter what.

The moment I graduated, I left town forever – and erased the girl I used to be.
New name. New body. New life.
Even my own mom wouldn’t recognize me now.

But two years later I’m back in Devil’s Paradise – the place I swore I’d never return to.

Because Mia is missing.

Her last letter says she was being watched. Followed. Hunted.

So here I am. Mia needs me. Me and her – we’ve always saved each other.
But no one can know my real name isn’t Charlie, it’s Reagan.
That I used to be one of them.

Because if they find out who I really am, it’s not just Mia’s life on the line … it’s mine too.

My Review

A Dark and Emotional Story of Friendship, Secrets and Reinvention

Some books immediately feel like they’re written for a very specific audience, and Me & Her is one of those novels. Dark, emotionally intense and layered with secrets, this is a story that leans heavily into atmosphere, identity and the complicated bonds of friendship.

The premise instantly caught my attention: Reagan fled town the moment she graduated, reinventing herself completely and leaving her old life behind. But when her best friend Mia disappears, she’s forced to return to the town – and the past – she thought she’d escaped forever.

At the heart of the novel is the relationship between Reagan and Mia. Their friendship drives the story forward and creates much of the emotional tension throughout the book. There’s a strong sense of history between them, with layers slowly unfolding as Reagan revisits people and places tied to her former life.

Kaelin Wennerberg writes with a very distinctive narrative style, giving the story an introspective feel that keeps the focus firmly on Reagan’s thoughts, memories and fears. The mystery surrounding Mia’s disappearance gradually builds as more details emerge, and there’s an underlying sense of unease running through the novel from beginning to end.

The themes of reinvention, trauma, loyalty and identity are woven throughout the story, particularly through Reagan’s struggle to separate who she once was from who she has become. Readers who enjoy character-driven suspense with a reflective, conversational narrative style will likely find themselves drawn into the world of Devil’s Paradise.

While this wasn’t entirely my usual reading style personally, I could still appreciate the ambition behind the concept and the emotional core at the centre of the story. The premise itself is incredibly compelling, and the novel offers a darker, more psychological take on friendship, secrets and survival.

Me & Her is a story filled with tension, buried truths and the lingering pull of the past — one that will particularly appeal to readers who enjoy slower-burn suspense with strong emotional themes.
