About The Book:
AND THE DEVIL DANCED by JANEY CLARKE
THE DEVEIL’S MOUNTAIN DAMES - BOOK 2
ABOUT THE BOOK:
In the unforgiving heart of the Old West, the peaceful lives of frontier settlers are in turmoil as the vengeful figure known as Shadow Hawk strikes under cover, spreading darkness.

His brutal campaign, marked by Bible verses foretelling divine retribution, leaves fear in his wake as he seeks to settle a long-buried score.

Amid the rising terror, Josh and Amy must face yet another ruthless threat—a relentless pursuer bent on taking Josh’s life. Their trials deepen when a devastating grasshopper swarm ravages their land, leaving their livelihood at stake.

Desperate to protect her family’s future, Amy pins her hopes on a legendary treasure—the fabled Jesuit gold, a prize that could pay for her younger brother's education back East and provide for her ailing father. Together, Josh and Amy must conquer foes both human and natural to reclaim peace and secure a brighter future.

About the Author:

Janey Clarke writes charming, witty, cosy mysteries. From septuagenarian shenanigans in Cornwall to the intrigue of Regency-era whodunits and now to her newest venture into the rugged drama of the Wild West.

When not plotting her next twist or researching historical details, she can be found exploring the stunning Jurassic Coast in Dorset with her loyal spaniel by her side. With a passion for tea, old books, and well-timed humour, Janey Clarke creates stories she hopes will whisk readers away to delightful worlds where solving a mystery is always the order of the day. And always solved by a feisty heroine!

My Review…
5/5 star read
MoMoBookDiary gives this a 5 out of 5 rating

Picking up exactly where The Shattered Past left off, And The Devil Danced by Janey Clarke sweeps readers straight back into the rugged beauty and raw emotion of the Old West. After reading many books in between, I found it thrilling to land immediately back in the heart of Josh and Amy’s world — almost as if I had simply turned the page into the next chapter of their journey. Clarke’s flowing, natural storytelling not only made it easy to reconnect with the characters I’d come to care about, but also offers just enough context for new readers to feel at home.

From the very first page, the emotions from the first book came rushing back, and as the story unfolded, I found myself even more deeply invested. Watching the family adapt and grow in the face of new dangers — from a shadowy, vengeful enemy to the harsh unpredictability of frontier life — made this sequel even more captivating than the first.

The romance tag from book one takes a quieter role here. While there’s still a thread of longing and unspoken connection between Josh and Amy, both are all too aware that Josh’s past is a mystery — one that may involve a life, a partner, or even children he can’t remember. This emotional restraint adds a bittersweet edge to their growing bond, and I admired the maturity with which both characters handle their feelings. Their story is one of loyalty and survival, not just love.

This second book brings fresh danger to Nowhere, with deadly newcomers hired to kill Josh and a deeper mystery surrounding who wants him gone. The search for the elusive Jesuit gold continues, offering both promise and peril, while Amy shoulders growing responsibility as her father’s health declines. A new family arrival adds complexity and warmth to the story, reminding us that even in the harshest times, hope can take root. The challenges they face — from hired killers to devastating natural events — never feel over the top; instead, they’re grounded in the very real sense of what it meant to survive on the frontier.

I loved this book even more than the first and found myself completely immersed from start to finish. Janey Clarke has a gift for balancing grit with heart, action with emotional depth. And The Devil Danced is a worthy continuation of The Devil’s Mountain Dames series, and I cannot wait to read the next instalment when it comes around.
