THE CHRISTMAS PARTY by Karen Swan

The Christmas Party is a delicious, page-turning story of romance, family and secrets, by the Sunday Times bestselling author Karen Swan.

SYNOPSIS

When Declan Lorne, the last remaining knight in Ireland, dies suddenly, an ancient title passes with him. But his estate on Ireland’s rugged south-west coast is left to his three daughters. The two eldest, Ottie and Pip, inherit in line with expectations, but to everyone’s surprise – and dismay – it is the errant baby of the family, Willow, who gets the castle.

Why her? Something unknown – something terrible – made her turn her back on her family three years earlier, escaping to Dublin and vowing never to return. So when Willow quickly announces she is selling up, her revenge seems sweet and the once-close sisters are pushed to breaking point: in desperation, Pip risks everything to secure her own future, and Ottie makes a decision that will ruin lives. It’s each woman for herself.

Before moving in, Connor Shaye, the prospective new owner, negotiates throwing a lavish party at the castle just days before Christmas – his hello, their goodbye.

But as their secrets begin to catch up with them, Ottie, Willow and Pip are forced to ask themselves which is harder: stepping into the future, or letting go of the past?

MOMO’S REVIEW

This is a charming, very well written story following three sisters in the run up to Christmas Day 2019. I really devoured this enjoyable tale which has many likeable characters which are perfectly described to allow the reader to picture them – including the lovely Irish setting!

The book leads the reader on a feel good journey and has some of everything – humour, sadness, fear, tension and of course love. There is, as always, a serious message held within the lightheartedness.

Whilst the book does have the ever-predictable ending this knowledge does not spoil the enjoyment of reading a book based around Christmas – after all those of us who read Christmas novels do so for this very reason. The perfect Christmas fairytale!

My sincere thanks to NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for an advanced readers copy of ‘The Christmas Party’ by Karen Swan. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

MOMO’s REVIEW

This was a nice easy read which I felt was a well-written enjoyable tale.

This was the first book I have read by the lovely Hayson Manning but I am on the lookout for more….

As someone who loves to watch the Christmas movies on TV from mid October this was just my style of light hearted romance where you know the plot within the first few pages but you still need to keep reading just in case.

I love Princess Bride, Young and the Restless, Days of our Lives – the drama is deliciously addictive. Big Bang Theory but will take Wolowitz over Cooper. Star Trek not Star Wars. Undercover Boss, Secret Millionaire – any story that shows the little guy making it.

I was born in Auckland and have lived in gorgeous Turnham Green, Sydney and now live in the USA. I follow the Buffalo Bills like a religion. I am spellbound by show jumping and equestrian eventing. I love curling up and reading all books – no genre is off-topic. I like ironing, I hate peas, love donkeys, I play a killer game of Scrabble. I will often be heading towards the fridge for another Diet Coke. I eat nothing with legs and believe wine goes with everything, oh and I’m an expert at finding new and inventive ways to avoid exercise.

I live in the sparkly beachside suburb of Redondo Beach in California with my infuriating shoe-dropping husband and my two boys who speak in mystifying grunts.

2aMOMOBOOKDIARY REVIEW

This is the first Laura Barnard book I have read.

Click here to see my blog post when I was part of the author’s cover reveal earlier this month.

I was excited to read this book as the synopsis caught my attention immediately, it seemed just my type of fun read.  I was a bit surprised by the opening chapter as it starts with a quite graphic sex scene however once I was into the story I quickly became swept along with the authors way of writing.

There are a few sexually graphic scenes and some sexual language used throughout the book but the author has written these from a fun point of view which had me smiling and laughing rather than cringing – you know what I mean!

The author has a modern, fun way of telling the story of Alice and Tom and I really did enjoy the journey of the ‘will they – won’t they’ and reading quicker and quicker to find out what happens.

Laura Barnard has brilliantly introduced all the characters in such a way that I felt I knew them well – they were not just names – and there are a lot of friends to remember.

I especially loved the character of Alice – her clothes sound fantastic and I’d love to be able to be brave enough to wear her style!

It is very much a standalone story however I feel I should now read the first two books in the Babes of Brighton series to get the back stories on the friends.

Borrowing Time by Kat Bellemore

A Borrowing Amor Novella

Kat Bellemore has written Borrowing Time, a novella set in Amor.

This exclusive novella is only available to those who have subscribed to her newsletter at kat-bellemore.com

Borrowing Time gives a glimpse into the life of Ruby, Sam’s sister, before Katie ever stumbled into the New Mexican town of Amor.

 MOMOBOOKDIARY REVIEW

After reading Borrowing Christmas earlier this month I was excited to see there was more to read about the town of Amor in New Mexico.  I quickly signed up for Kat’s newsletter.

This is a brilliant little read.  It is so sweet and clean and just lovely.  The thing you need to remember when reading this is that it is set BEFORE Borrowing Christmas – before Sam becomes mayor.  That took me a few minutes to work out (or maybe I’ve just read too many books this week!) but once I had everyone in my head I knew who was who.

I have to say Zoe’s brother, Clark, sounds totally yummy – and he loves dogs which makes him even better – if that is possible.

Keep writing Kat, I need to know about Amor…..

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Kat Bellemore is the author of the Borrowing Amor clean romance series. Deciding to have New Mexico as the setting for the series was an easy choice, considering its amazing sunsets, blue skies and tasty green chili.  That, and she currently lives there with her husband and two cute kids. They hope to one day add a dog to the family, but for now, the native animals of the desert will have to do. Though, Kat wouldn’t mind ridding the world of scorpions and centipedes. They’re just mean.

I really did enjoy this fun story which will have you laughing out loud – although I am sure lead character, Michelle, wouldn’t have been laughing so much.  It was brilliantly written and certainly made me want to read more from this author.

Happy Publication Day Josie Silver

I have read and reviewed this brilliant romance. One Day in December is a beautiful story of friendship, romance and a love triangle with a difference. This is a must-read novel of 2018.

Two people. Ten chances, One unforgettable love story.

A love story about what happens after you meet, or rather, don’t meet the one.

Laurie is pretty sure love at first sight doesn’t exist anywhere but the movies. But then, through a misted-up bus window one snowy December day, she sees a man who she knows instantly is the one. Their eyes meet, there’s a moment of pure magic…and then her bus drives away.

Certain they’re fated to find each other again, Laurie spends a year scanning every bus stop and cafe in London for him. But she doesn’t find him, not when it matters anyway. Instead they “reunite” at a Christmas party, when her best friend Sarah giddily introduces her new boyfriend to Laurie. It’s Jack, the man from the bus. It would be.

What follows for Laurie, Sarah and Jack is ten years of friendship, heartbreak, missed opportunities, roads not taken, and destinies reconsidered. One Day in December is a joyous, heartwarming and immensely moving love story to escape into and a reminder that fate takes inexplicable turns along the route to happiness.

Borrowing Christmas by Kat Bellemore

(Borrowing Amor Book One)

Love is a nuisance when all you want is to do is disappear.

Two weeks before Christmas, Katie is kicked out of her apartment. Again. Rather than wander the streets and continue to work for a dirty cop, she decides to leave the city and disappear for good. But her car breaks down in a New Mexico town, and everything is threatened when she falls for the charming mayor.

Sam Freedman is the first bachelor mayor of Amor. After convincing the locals that having a mayor without family responsibilities means he can dedicate all his time to the community, townspeople watch his every move. Then Katie Andersen shows up. Against Sam’s better judgement, he hires her to replace his event coordinator. Now he can barely think straight, let alone run a town.

In the midst of half-truths and outright lies, Katie and Sam desperately search for the place where honesty and trust lead to love. Can they find it before the past catches up with them?

MOMOBOOKDIARY REVIEW

I was honoured to read this book prior to publication following a request from the author, Kat Bellemore.  Borrowing Christmas is a beautiful clean romance set in a small town in New Mexico.

The author has penned a short heart-warming and uplifting tale which gets right to the heart of the story quickly and you can feel yourself simply whipped up and taken on a winter wonderland tale of love and romance.

Brilliant book which I read in an afternoon – on the sofa with a few cups of tea and a nice fluffy blanket (and my dog!). Recommended reading for the festive season approaching.

The Rome Affair by Karen Swan

A love that can’t be stopped.

A secret that can’t be kept.

Synopsis

The glamorous capital city of Italy is brought to startling life in The Rome Affair, a compelling summer novel by Karen Swan.

1974 and Elena Damiani lives a gilded life. Born to wealth and a noted beauty, no door is closed to her, no man can resist her. At twenty-six, she is already onto her third husband when she meets her love match. But he is the one man she can never have, and all the beauty and money in the world can’t change it.

2017 and Francesca Hackett is living la dolce vita in Rome, leading tourist groups around the Eternal City and forgetting the ghosts she left behind in London. When she finds a stolen designer handbag in her dustbin and returns it, she is brought into the orbit of her grand neighbour who lives across the piazza – famed socialite Viscontessa Elena dei Damiani Pignatelli della Mirandola. Though the purse is stolen, Elena greets the return of the bag with exultation for it contains an unopened letter written by her husband on his deathbed, twelve years earlier.

Mutually intrigued by each other, the two women agree to collaborate on a project, with Cesca interviewing Elena for her memoirs. As summer unfurls, Elena tells her sensational stories, leaving Cesca in her thrall. But when a priceless diamond ring found in an ancient tunnel below the city streets is ascribed to Elena, Cesca begins to suspect a shocking secret at the heart of Elena’s life.

MoMoBookDiary Review

I enjoyed this compulsive page-turner by the bestselling author Karen Swan.

The story is set in Rome and follows two timelines – Elena’s story is told in the past with Cesca’s story being present day. The author splits these times very well and is a very enjoyable book.

The characters become very real that you feel like you have lost a friend when you get to the end.

Recommended reading from Karen Swan!

MoMoBookDiary Review

This is a step away from my normal reads but one that I was very pleased to be asked to read.  I enjoyed it very much and although it is a Young Adult read, I found the story very well written.  The story flows very well and the characters personalities are true and work at pulling your emotions.

The cover is just perfect for grabbing the attention of young adults.  The chapters are of a good length and have you rushing forward to read one more page…. One more chapter…. Until you reach the end!

Lovely book, Beautiful story. Impressive author!
