My Review

A Tense, High-Stakes Thriller of Secrets, Lies and Shattered Trust

After reading a run of historical fiction and romance novels, I was really ready for something completely different. I wanted tension, pace, and that constant feeling of uncertainty. This thriller delivered that from the very first chapter.

The opening immediately creates questions rather than answers. There’s a sense of danger from the outset, and before you’ve even settled into the story, you realise this isn’t going to be a straightforward narrative. When the focus then shifts to Callum — grieving, confused and trying to process what he’s been told — the contrast is powerful. As a reader, you’re already aware that there’s more beneath the surface, and that awareness adds an extra layer of tension to everything that follows.

One of the things I particularly enjoyed was the structure. The book alternates between Callum in the present day, desperately trying to piece together the truth, and Lea’s perspective in the years leading up to the current events — going back to when she first meets him. Those chapters gradually fill in gaps without ever handing you the full picture too easily. It’s almost like watching two timelines slowly move toward each other, each revealing just enough to deepen the mystery. I thought this worked brilliantly because it creates dramatic irony without spoiling anything. There are moments where you know slightly more than Callum does, and moments where you’re just as much in the dark as he is. That push and pull keeps the tension high. Every chapter felt purposeful — either raising new questions in the present or subtly reshaping your understanding of the past.

What really stood out to me was the emotional layer running alongside the thriller elements. Callum isn’t just dealing with danger; he’s trying to reconcile the woman he loved with the fragments of truth he’s uncovering. The constant doubt — about her, about the people around him, even about what he thought was real — gives the story weight beyond the action. You can’t help but imagine how unsettling it would be to discover that the life you believed in might never have existed in the way you thought.

The pacing is strong throughout, particularly as events push him beyond the UK and deeper into Europe. It has that cinematic, high-stakes feel, but it never loses sight of the human side of the story. Even when the action intensifies, the emotional confusion remains at the heart of it. I did occasionally feel a little lost with some of the political elements, but not in a way that detracted from the overall experience. I understood enough to follow the stakes, and the personal story was compelling enough to keep me fully invested. Overall, this was a tense, gripping and thoroughly enjoyable read. The dual timeline added depth, the shifting perspectives kept the mystery alive, and the constant uncertainty made it hard to put down. It was exactly the genre switch I needed, and I’ll definitely be reading more from Rob Sinclair.
