As always, this review reflects my honest thoughts.

About the book

Tom Naylor – a good cop with a deadly skill.

Nottingham 1990. Ex-paratrooper Tom Naylor is a sniper in the Special Operations Unit, the dedicated firearms response teams of the Nottinghamshire Police.

Each book in this gripping trilogy focuses on a single case –

In Two Wrongs, Naylor’s unit combats the warring drug gangs who are fighting for control of the city.

In The Root of All Evil, Naylor infiltrates a lethal gang of armed robbers, some of
whom are also ex-military.

In The Cause, Naylor plays a deadly game of cat-and-mouse with an elite IRA sniper who is on a mission to strike at the very heart of the British establishment.

Written by a former police firearms specialist, the Naylor trilogy is a must-read, combining absolutely riveting storytelling with an insider’s eye for authentic detail.

My Review

Two Wrongs throws you straight into Nottingham’s criminal underworld in the 1980s, and right from the outset you can feel the authenticity running through every page. Trevor Negus writes with the authority of someone who has lived and breathed this world, and that insider knowledge gives the story a realism that crime fiction fans will love.

Tom Naylor, an ex-paratrooper now serving in the Special Operations Unit, is a character you trust immediately. He’s composed, capable and quietly intense – not a flashy action hero, but a professional who carries the weight of his role with conviction. I really liked him from the beginning and found him easy to follow, even as the story widened to include the wider dynamics of the unit and the criminal networks at play.

The plot centres on warring drug gangs fighting for control of Nottingham, and the tension escalates at a steady pace. What initially feels like a lot of information soon becomes one of the book’s greatest strengths. The level of detail isn’t there to overwhelm – it builds a world that feels operational, layered and lived-in. Once I settled into the rhythm of it, I found the depth fascinating and absorbing.

And I have to mention the sniper scene – I was genuinely holding my breath. It’s written with such precision and control that you can feel every moment of anticipation. The realism in both action and mindset made it one of the standout scenes of the book for me.

The writing is clean, grounded and easy to read once you’re in the flow. The pacing picks up as the story progresses, and by the midpoint I was completely invested. It’s clear that this first book lays the foundations for the wider trilogy, but it still stands firmly on its own as a gripping, fully formed story.

The storytelling is layered, the characters are compelling and the attention to detail elevates the whole reading experience. What I first thought might be too much information quickly revealed itself to be one of the book’s biggest strengths – it adds realism, richness and tension in all the right places. I’m moving straight into book two and I’m genuinely excited to see where the trilogy goes next.
