About the Book:
TWO CHILDREN WENT INTO THE SEA.
When Andrew and Sophie take their daughter and her friend to the beach on a stormy day, they are momentarily distracted and both children are washed out to sea.
Andrew dives in, but comes back ashore with only one child – Maria, his own daughter. Joe, the son of his best friend and local police officer, Chris, has drowned.
But it was just a tragic accident…wasn’t it?
ONLY ONE CAME OUT ALIVE.
As Sergeant Mike Adams and DS Sue Willmott investigate what really happened in the water that afternoon, the ripple effects of the tragedy tear the community apart.
The detectives must discover the truth before their colleague – bereaved and desperate father, Chris – takes the investigation into his own hands…
BUT WHO IS TO BLAME?

My Review of After The Storm
GD Wright’s debut novel After the Storm is an astonishingly powerful and emotionally charged read that left me breathless.
From the opening pages, I was pulled into a harrowing story of grief, guilt, and the unrelenting aftermath of tragedy, and I never once felt like I could look away.
This isn’t just a thriller; it’s a raw, human story that cuts deep. The emotional weight carried by both families at the centre of the tragedy is almost unbearable at times. Even as someone who isn’t a parent, I found myself overwhelmed by the intensity of the loss and the impossible decisions faced by those left behind. I can only imagine how deeply this book might affect someone who has experienced anything close to what’s described within its pages.
The pacing is relentless. I found myself repeating “just one more chapter” long into the night, completely immersed in the unfolding drama. Wright writes with such honesty and emotional insight that every character feels heartbreakingly real. He captures the helplessness, the confusion, and the desperate need to make sense of the unimaginable with such precision that it hurts to read – but in the best possible way.
There’s a quiet devastation to this story. It’s not driven by dramatic twists for shock value, but by the slow, painful unravelling of lives caught in the wake of unimaginable loss. And through it all, there’s an underlying compassion, a tenderness that balances the anguish with hope.
As a debut, this is an astonishing achievement. GD Wright sets the bar high with After the Storm, delivering not just a gripping page-turner, but a story that demands to be felt. I finished the final page with tears in my eyes, completely drained but profoundly moved.

Behind the Scenes:
My introduction to GD Wright …… the night before publication, I saw a heartfelt post on X.com from the author, sharing a video clip of his two children. It stopped me in my tracks — and I pre-ordered the digital copy on the spot. When it landed on my device, I started reading… and I couldn’t stop. Knowing the story behind the author’s journey — and picturing those children as I turned each page — made the book hit even harder. I cried more times than I can count, and read right through into the early hours of the morning, completely undone.
