A Rising Man

Wyndham and Banerjee #1

Abir Mukherjee

About the book:

India, 1919
Desperate for a fresh start, Captain Sam Wyndham arrives to take up an important post in Calcutta’s police force. He is soon called to the scene of a horrifying murder. The victim was a senior official, and a note left in his mouth warns the British to leave India – or else. With the stability of the Empire under threat, Wyndham and Sergeant ‘Surrender-not’ Banerjee must solve the case quickly. But there are some who will do anything to stop them…

My Thoughts:

This is an excellent introduction to the final days of the Raj, cleverly woven into a mystery. A hint of romance is intertwined with rich history and politics. The supporting characters add just the right mix of clues and red herrings, creating a well-balanced and thoroughly entertaining story. For me, it was a moderately paced read, as I was absorbing the historical details while enjoying the fictional narrative.

Joined by special guests, British Asian authors, Vaseem Khan and Abir Mukherjee take a wry look at the world of books, writing, and the creative arts, tackling everything from bestsellers to pop culture and Big Fat Asian Weddings. Insightful, funny, packed with stellar interviews – Dean Koontz, Val McDermid, Ann Cleeves, Mike Gayle, to name a few – and the odd dose of cross-cultural confusion, they dare to explore the parts other podcasts cannot reach.
