Wyndham and Banerjee #2

Abir Mukherjee

About the book:

India, 1920
Captain Sam Wyndham and Sergeant Banerjee of Calcutta Police must investigate the dramatic assassination of a Maharaja’s son… Sam Wyndham is visiting the kingdom of Sambalpore, home to diamond mines and the beautiful Palace of the Sun. But when the Maharaja’s eldest son is assassinated, Wyndham realises that the realm is riven with conflict. Prince Adhir was unpopular with religious groups, while his brother – now in line to the throne – appears to be a feckless playboy. As Wyndham and Sergeant ‘Surrender-not’ Banerjee endeavour to unravel the mystery, they become entangled in a dangerous world. They must find the murderer, before the murderer finds them.

My Thoughts:

This brilliant sequel brings back Captain Wyndham and Sergeant Banerjee where the author’s meticulous research vividly captures the atmosphere of 1920s India. The story offers a glimpse into the lives of the rich and powerful while delving deeper into the evolving relationship between Captain and Sergeant as they develop a strong partnership built on trust and cooperation. It’s a superb, complex, and gripping portrayal of 1920s India, providing a brutal yet insightful look at the culture, attitudes, and practices of both the British and the Indian Princes, highlighting their divisions over the path forward.

Joined by special guests, British Asian authors, Vaseem Khan and Abir Mukherjee take a wry look at the world of books, writing, and the creative arts, tackling everything from bestsellers to pop culture and Big Fat Asian Weddings. Insightful, funny, packed with stellar interviews – Dean Koontz, Val McDermid, Ann Cleeves, Mike Gayle, to name a few – and the odd dose of cross-cultural confusion, they dare to explore the parts other podcasts cannot reach.
