About the book:

Psychopaths can take root in the unlikeliest soil… DC Maggie Jamieson crosses paths once again with Probation Officer Lucy Sherwood when a domestic violence survivor stumbles into her new refuge, unable to speak, desperate for help. Then another case hits Maggie’s desk. A young man has been murdered, and a curious constellation of black dots has been inked onto his cheek. That’s when DCI Hastings goes missing and Maggie uncovers a shocking connection that turns the case on its head. Every family may hide secrets, but not every family buries them…

My Thoughts:

As expected, I moved on to Book 4, “Dead Secret” without delay following the final page of book 3.

This book begins with the shocking disappearance of a senior police officer and his family. Initially, he appears to be implicated in the brutal murder of a young man. While the team finds it hard to view him as a killer, the evidence against him continues to mount. The author skill-fully portrays the team’s evolving perspectives as the story unfolds. This well-plotted book features a classic battle of good versus evil, playing a crucial role in a thrilling tale that culminates in a satisfying conclusion.

Noelle Holten is a brilliant author! Her twists, turns, and edge-of-your-seat writing will keep you turning pages late into the night. She has truly mastered the art of the cliffhanger ending, leaving you desperate to get your hands on Book 5.

I met Noelle Holten at the book signing of another author a few years ago and bought the first four books immediately. Whilst I was excited to read them, they sat on my bookshelf for way too long! Once I started reading I couldn’t stop and was pleased I had the full set at hand to read as each book ends with a cliff-hanger for the next instalment. I realised in enough time that there was a fifth book and was able to get that just in time!

I am thrilled to highly recommend this series and its talented author, Noelle Holten. She has crafted a brilliant, original, and thought-provoking series. Her experience in the field is evident, providing an authentic portrayal of the damaging effects of domestic abuse across generations and the challenges faced by professionals in this area. The series focuses on the probation service, and the authenticity of the procedures, characters, and dialogue is a major strength. I was captivated from the start and eagerly binge-read the series from the first page of book one to the final page of book five.
