Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

CORSAIR / Little Brown Books

DESCRIPTION

For years, rumors of the ‘Marsh Girl’ have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life – until the unthinkable happens.

MOMO’S REVIEW

A quick scan of my previous reviews will show that I read crime fiction and romance fiction – rarely much else gets my attention. This book caught my eye on various times and places. Most recently a friend was reading it and I decided that I too needed to read it. I knew NOTHING of the book – didn’t what it was about, where or when it was set – NOTHING. I liked the cover and many many people were reading and talking about how good it was. Then I received my copy and saw it was set in 1969 I feared I had made a mistake – I don’t read books set in the past…. but I wanted to give it a chance so started reading – and couldn’t stop until I reached the end. I am so glad I read this incredible book – and you should too!

The author’s outstanding knowledge and understanding of nature and the natural world is evident by the beautiful descriptive emotional writing.

I had tears in my eyes many times throughout the story which pulled at my emotions. Reading the book during the Covid-19 isolation period made the setting of the book seem even more relevant today. This story takes us back to a time when the world moved at a slower pace and right now it feels like the earth is being given a chance to recover whilst we all stop and I think it is much needed – for the earth as much as for us humans.

I envisage this novel becoming a ‘classic’ which will be read again and again in the future. I believe there is a lot we can learn from this novel about the world we live in. Everyone should read this book. It is a story of survival, of prejudice, of poverty, of isolation and loneliness, and of nature and humanity. There is mystery. There is love. There is heartache. There is hope.

Congratulations Delia Owens on an epic first novel. Thank you for sharing with us this insight into your knowledge and experiences. I look forward to reading your next novel when it is released…. there will be a next one, right?

MOMO’S REVIEW

This is domestic tale of suspense full of twists and turns. So many threads running, you won’t know who to trust, or what secrets were being kept.

The story was well written with a good plot although I felt it was a bit clunky in the middle.

I had not read anything by either of the authors involved in this book but I will look out for them in the future.

OUR DARK SECRET by JENNY QUINTANA

Two Girls. Two Deaths. Two Decades of Silence.

*MANTLE BOOKS

ABOUT…

The crazy girls, they called them – or at least, Elizabeth liked to think they did.

As a teenager in the late 1970s, she was clever, overweight and a perfect victim for the bullies.

Then Rachel and her family arrived in town and, for Elizabeth, it was as if a light had been switched on. She was drawn to the bright and beautiful Rachel like a moth to a flame.

Rachel had her own reasons for wanting Elizabeth as a friend, and although their relationship was far from equal, Elizabeth would do anything for Rachel.

Then the first body was discovered.

Twenty years on, Elizabeth wants nothing more than to keep the secrets of her teenage years where they belong: in the past. But another body has been found, and she can’t keep running from what happened.

Can she?

MOMO’S REVIEW

This was a new author for me and I could have easily read the whole book in a day however I was reading on the Pigeonhole app which (again) was so frustrating as I could only read 10% per day (see Pigeonhole.com for full details) but this is a new way of reading and I want to persevere with it. It also means I can be reading multiple books at the same time.

This book is one which I eagerly recommend to fans of suspense. It is not so much a chilling thriller and a mystery suspense which was a nice change after reading so many dark and chilling novels of late.

The author tells the tale of Elizabeth and Rachel switching between past and present. It is an enjoyable read which had me guessing most of the way through the book. There are a few points where I thought I knew the direction the book was going only to find it didn’t. I like that!!

The story itself was believable, the characters likeable and the setting very clearly described.

Another book that I will be purchasing in paperback to read at my own fast pace after the start stop of pigeonhole! Don’t get me wrong I do love the pigeonhole format – it is just taking a bit of time to get used to staves (and waiting, I don’t do waiting!!).

CLOSE TO HOME by Cara Hunter

DI Fawley (book #1)

Penguin

DESCRIPTION

HOW CAN A CHILD GO MISSING WITHOUT A TRACE?

Last night, eight-year-old Daisy Mason disappeared from a family party.

No one in the quiet suburban street saw anything – or at least that’s what they’re saying.

DI Adam Fawley is trying to keep an open mind. But he knows the nine times out of ten, it’s someone the victim knew.

That means someone is lying…

And that Daisy’s time is running out.

MOMO’S REVIEW

This was my second read with Pigeonhole (see bottom of this post for full details on Pigeonhole) and it was no easier than the first – it may have been harder. I tend to read and read once I begin a new book – most of the time finishing in a couple of days if not a single day so reading sections every day over ten days is not something I am used to at all.

Anyhow, on to the book itself. Brilliant. Gripping. I really enjoyed this book. It is full of suspense and many dead end suggestions plotted by the very talented author. Just when you think you have an idea of who is to blame for little Daisy going missing the spotlight shifts and someone else is in the frame. The parents are not ‘likeable’ as parents and caused me some frustration at times but even so, no-one deserves to lose a child. It seems everyone has secrets.

The author keeps the plot moving at a good fast pace and this ensures the book deserves headline reviews such as ‘page-turner’ ‘brilliant’ and ‘gripping’. There are so many threads its only due to the authors expert attention to detail that clues are given throughout the book and all the threads are pulled together by the end of the book.

I have already purchased kindle version of this book, and the other two books of the DI Fawley series. I am excited to share this book with readers who enjoy a good suspenseful read that keeps them guessing!

Before the couple go on a romantic weekend trip, Morgan attends an appointment with her neurologist, Dr. Koftura, who has monitored her since an accident she had when she was seven years old. Morgan has a history of sabotaging her romantic relationships and the Doctor is concerned that she is following the same patterns with Justin.

On the day of their trip Justin’s behavior becomes erratic and he runs the car off the road into a tree, killing himself and hurting Morgan.

When she awakens in the hospital to find that Justin is dead, Morgan has little time to grapple with this loss before detectives arrive to question her about the crash.

As it becomes clear that the detectives believe Morgan is responsible for Justin’s death, Morgan must unlock the secrets of her past in order to prove her innocence.

But can she really trust her own mind?

MOMO’S REVIEW

I received a copy of this book from the author following a conversation on twitter. I had not heard of the author before but the book cover and synopsis really caught my attention. Sarah K. Stephens appears to be such a lovely lady on twitter but this book is so twisted her mind must be a scary scary place!

The synopsis gives away a lot of the plot (too much IMHO) but there is still so much more to this story. I felt I was reading on the edge of a cliff rather than cuddled up on my sofa. The author gives us surprising twists, dead ends and you just don’t know who to trust. The author cleverly adds a comment here and there to give clues but are they real or do they distract you…. read and see!

I will be highly recommending this book to many people. Its a different type of thriller and one that I am very glad I managed to read this week. I will be reading Sarah’s other books as soon as I can get my hands on them.

AN ANONYMOUS GIRL by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen

From Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, the authors of the top ten bestseller The Wife Between Us, comes An Anonymous Girl – an electrifying novel about doubt, passion and deadly obsession . . .

DESCRIPTION

Seeking women ages 18–32 to participate in a study on ethics and morality. Generous compensation. Anonymity guaranteed.

When Jessica Farris signs up for a psychology study conducted by the mysterious Dr Shields, she thinks all she’ll have to do is answer a few questions, collect her money and leave.

But as the questions grow more and more intense and invasive, and the sessions become outings where Jess is told what to wear and how to act, she begins to feel as though Dr Shields may know what she’s thinking . . . and what she’s hiding.

As Jess’s paranoia grows, it becomes clear that she can no longer trust what is real in her life, and what is one of Dr Shields’s manipulative experiments.

Caught in a web of deceit and jealousy, Jess quickly learns that some obsessions can be deadly.

MOMO’S REVIEW

Excellent writing by two authors who clearly know how to write a psychological thriller that is sure to keep readers addicted right to the final pages.

It was an interesting concept to use psychological studies which made it impossible to know who to trust. I did not find the story predictable at all which was a nice change after reading so many thrillers I tend to work out the ending beforehand – I didn’t here!

There are some questions within the book which I found thought-provoking and had me considering what my answer would have been. I loved it!

Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen are coauthors of the internationally-bestselling THE WIFE BETWEEN US and AN ANONYMOUS GIRL.

THE WIFE BETWEEN US – an instant New York Times bestseller – is a twisty psychological tale that has been optioned for film by Amblin Entertainment. Sarah and Greer are penning the screenplay for Amblin.

AN ANONMYOUS GIRL is currently in production as a television series by eOne,with Sarah and Greer serving as executive producers.

Greer Hendricks: co-author of the New York Times bestseller, The Wife Between Us and the forthcoming An Anonymous Girl.

Prior to becoming a novelist, Greer Hendricks spent two decades as an editor at Simon & Schuster. She obtained her master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University, and her writing has appeared in The New York Times, Allure, and Publishers Weekly. She lives in Manhattan with her husband and two children.

Sarah Pekkanen: #1 New York Times bestselling author who loves my kids, my dog, chocolate, and climbing mountains. Usually in that order.

Sarah is the mother of three boys, which explains why she wrote part of her debut novel at Chuck E. Cheese. Seriously. Sarah penned her first book, Miscellaneous Tales and Poems, at the age of 10. When publishers failed to jump upon this literary masterpiece (hey, all the poems rhymed!) Sarah followed up by sending them a sternly-worded letter on Raggedy Ann stationery. Sarah still has that letter, and carries it to New York every time she has meetings with her publisher, as a reminder that dreams do come true. Sarah Pekkanen is also the author of eight solo novels.

MOMO’S REVIEW

I purchased this kindle book knowing I was going to be attending Train Noir – Edinburgh (see below link for details) and I am so glad I did. It’s brilliant and kept me guessing right to the end. I have not read any other Mason Cross (MJ Cross) books but I will be looking out for them after this one.

Thoroughly enjoyable thriller with some brilliant twists which had me second-guessing what I thought was about to happen. There are two main characters which I found myself drawn to and I found myself surprised by some of the twists in the story and I liked that the book focused on the thriller story and didn’t get caught up in side stories like so many books do. You learn enough about the characters to be able to picture them but not too much that you are wishing the author would get on with the story. This book does not delay the action at all.

I was on edge the whole way through the book and read it in less than 24 hours. I loved the scene where they were running around the busy London traffic just as much as the time spend in the Scottish countryside.

Loved every minute of this book and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good suspense thriller – but maybe not for anyone who travels on the sleeper…

I am excited to be attending the Train Noir – Edinburgh event on 25th November. SJI Holliday’s Violet takes us on a trip on the Trans-Siberian Express, but one of the passengers is not who they claim to be. Meanwhile, MJ Cross begins What She Saw Last Night with a death on the Caledonian Sleeper and a mystery to unravel.

Violet by SJI Holliday

When two strangers end up sharing a cabin on the Trans-Siberian Express, an intense friendship develops, one that can only have one ending … a nerve-shattering psychological thriller from bestselling author SJI Holliday

SYNOPSIS

Carrie’s best friend has an accident and can no longer make the round-the-world trip they’d planned together, so Carrie decides to go it alone.

Violet is also travelling alone, after splitting up with her boyfriend in Thailand. She is also desperate for a ticket on the Trans-Siberian Express, but there is nothing available.

When the two women meet in a Beijing Hotel, Carrie makes the impulsive decision to invite Violet to take her best friend’s place.

Thrown together in a strange country, and the cramped cabin of the train, the women soon form a bond. But as the journey continues, through Mongolia and into Russia, things start to unravel – because one of these women is not who she claims to be…

A tense and twisted psychological thriller about obsession, manipulation and toxic friendships, Violet also reminds us that there’s a reason why mother told us not to talk to strangers…

MOMO’S REVIEW

I have read a number of Susi Holliday’s books and therefore I knew I was in for a great read!

I couldn’t wait to get started and the opening prologue grabbed my attention immediately and that was me settled in for the evening, all other plans cancelled.

The author has given us a fascinating twisted tale. Perplexing characters who in turn presents the reader with an unnerved expectation about both the characters the stories they share with each other.

I especially enjoyed the way that the various locations, including the Trans Siberian Express, were described by the author. I could almost feel as if I were there watching from across the room.

You just never know what the next pages will bring. Is Carrie in danger? Is Violet in danger? What is the truth? You will need to read the book to find out – you know I never give away any plot details in my reviews.

I am excited to be attending the Train Noir – Edinburgh event on 25th November. Until, late one evening, Alicia shoots Gabriel five times and then never speaks another word.

THEO
Forensic psychotherapist Theo Faber is convinced he can successfully treat Alicia, where all others have failed. Obsessed with investigating her crime, his discoveries suggest Alicia’s silence goes far deeper than he first thought.

And if she speaks, would he want to hear the truth?

MoMo’s Review

I received this book from NetGalley and am pleased to be able to share my review as follows:

I thoroughly enjoyed this compelling psychological thriller.

The writing style is just perfect for me – well written and straight to the point without the long drawn-out descriptive pages that often find their way into books. This was written to be an experience where you are carried along with the plot so much so that it could be read in a single sitting. I found it very difficult to put it down and even when I did I was constantly thinking about the characters.

I would recommend this book without hesitation.

MOMO’s REVIEW

Tracy Buchanan is a new author to me and I enjoyed this book and am thankful to NetGalley for introducing me to another wonderful author.

I found the book to be a real page turner which includes romance, adventure and an extra helping of intrigue.  The plot switches from past to present and the author gives us dilemmas which will have you thinking on what you would do in such a situation. The characters are deeply realistic and interesting.

Set during winter, fliting between Scotland and Iceland, is the perefect excuse to settle down, wrap up warm with a cosy blanket and a hot cuppa enjoy this perfect winter story.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

(taken from Amazon Author Page)
Hello! Fab to see you here. I live in Buckinghamshire, UK with my husband, my little girl and our (very naughty) puppy, Bronte.

I travelled extensively while working as a travel magazine editor, and have always been drawn to the sea after spending my childhood holidays on the south coast visiting family – a fascination that inspires my writing.

I now dedicate my time to writing and procrastinating on Facebook.

I’d love to hear from you so please come say hi on one of the following platforms… plus if you join The Reading Snug I’ve set up with fellow authors, Kelly Rimmer and Kerry Fisher, you might even bag yourself some freebies including an early copy of my latest novel, The Lost Sister!
